Custom Front & Back-Lit Channel Letters

Front and back-lit letters combine direct illumination through the face with a soft halo projected onto the mounting surface. The dual lighting effect provides strong visibility from the front while adding depth and atmosphere around each letter, making it an effective choice for flagship stores, hotels, entertainment venues, shopping centers, and high-profile commercial buildings.

The face and rear halo can use matching, contrasting, or brand-specific colors to create different visual effects. Every project can be customized in face material, return material, letter depth, surface finish, LED arrangement, rear spacing, electrical configuration, and mounting method. Tonight Sign supports both indoor and outdoor applications, from a single custom set to repeat production for sign companies, contractors, and multi-location brands.

Regular cleaning and inspection help maintain the bright face illumination, surface appearance, and service life of your front-lit channel letters.

  • Turn off the power before cleaning or inspection.
  • Remove dust using a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
  • Use clean water with mild soap for deeper cleaning.
  • Avoid abrasive tools, strong solvents, alcohol-based cleaners, and high-pressure water.
  • Inspect the faces, returns, trim, seals, drainage holes, wiring, and power supplies.
  • Keep ventilation and drainage openings clear.
  • Contact a qualified technician if you notice water entry, loose wiring, flickering, or reduced brightness.

Maintenance frequency depends on the installation environment, operating hours, weather, and exposure to dust, moisture, salt, or pollution.

Impact Through Dual Illumination

Direct face illumination and a rear halo combine to create strong brand recognition and a high-impact appearance from different viewing distances. The illuminated face provides clear, direct visibility, while the rear glow adds atmosphere and architectural interest. This combination is especially effective for flagship stores, shopping centers, hotels, entertainment venues, restaurants, and prominent commercial buildings.

Dimension Created by Layered Lighting

Layered front and rear illumination separates the letters from the wall and gives logos greater visual depth, especially at night. The face remains bright and recognizable, while reflected rear light creates a softer outline around each letter. Letter depth, LED placement, rear spacing, and wall condition are engineered together to produce a balanced relationship between the two lighting effects.

Control Over Face and Halo Effects

Choose matching, contrasting, or independently controlled face and halo colors, with RGB options available for dynamic lighting effects. A white illuminated face can be combined with a warm-white, colored, or RGB rear halo, while compatible electrical systems can support separate switching, remote control, mobile control, dimming, or programmed effects when required.

Flexibility Built Around Your Project

Customize the materials, letter depth, edge construction, rear spacing, lighting configuration, and mounting method for each project. Acrylic, resin, or liquid acrylic faces can be combined with aluminum, stainless steel, or acrylic returns, as well as trim-cap or trimless construction. Tonight Sign supports indoor and outdoor projects ranging from one custom set to consistent volume production.

Front & Back-Lit Letters FAQ

Front and back-lit letters combine direct face illumination with a reflected rear halo. They are suitable when strong visibility and additional architectural depth are both important. If only maximum brightness or only a subtle halo is required, a single-lighting construction may be simpler and more appropriate.

Yes, the two lighting zones can use matching, contrasting, or brand-specific colors. A white face can, for example, be paired with a warm-white, fixed-color, or RGB halo. The selected face material, rear construction, LEDs, and wall color all influence the final combination.

Independent switching, dimming, or color control can be provided when specified before production. Separate operation requires suitable circuits, wiring, controllers, and access to the electrical components. The desired operating functions should be confirmed before the production drawing is approved.

The two lighting zones are engineered separately using suitable LED output, spacing, face diffusion, letter depth, rear construction, and wall distance. This allows the direct face light and reflected halo to be visually balanced for the intended environment. Ambient lighting and wall reflectivity should also be considered when selecting the brightness levels.

The front face remains directly illuminated, but the rear halo depends strongly on the wall. Light-colored matte surfaces generally produce a clearer glow, while dark, glossy, uneven, or textured walls may reduce or distort it. A backer panel can be considered when the existing surface is unsuitable.

Front faces can be made from acrylic, resin, or liquid acrylic, with trim-cap or selected trimless constructions. Returns are available in aluminum, stainless steel, or acrylic, while the rear may use clear or translucent acrylic or an engineered open-back structure. Materials are selected according to the design, depth, lighting arrangement, environment, and required finish.

Letter depth must provide sufficient room for the front lighting, rear lighting, internal wiring, and structural components. Rear spacing is then selected according to the desired halo width, LED output, wall condition, and mounting system. Both dimensions are confirmed together during the engineering review.

Not necessarily. The two lighting circuits may share a suitably sized power supply, while independent controls, higher electrical loads, long wiring runs, or servicing requirements may make separate supplies more practical. The final arrangement is based on the complete electrical load and control plan.

Individual stand-off mounting creates the rear gap needed for the halo but may require several wall penetrations for fixings and wiring. Raceway, wireway, and backer-panel systems can organize the electrical components and simplify installation on certain façades. The chosen system must support both lighting zones without blocking the rear illumination.

Yes, a properly designed backer panel can provide a smoother reflective surface, improve contrast, conceal wiring, and reduce the impact of uneven or unsuitable walls. Its size, color, finish, depth, and mounting position affect the width and appearance of the halo. The panel should therefore be designed as part of the complete sign rather than added after production.
